SUP Yoga: Your first 5 asanas on the board
The first experience of SUP yoga can be confusing – but amazing – since you are perhaps more familiar with practising yoga on the mat.
You’re probably imagining all the balancing or headstand poses on top of a tiny board that’s moving around. And, if you have never practised yoga before, perhaps you think you should try it on a mat first rather than on a board.
But… the boards we use are specially designed for SUP yoga and they are very buoyant and stable.
And there is progression in the poses. During the first session we only stand up for a couple of minutes and do very basic poses to get a feel for it and experiment with balance. For the rest of the session, we are on all fours, lying down or face down.
All the asanas we practice help us to familiarise ourselves with the buoyancy and movement of our body, creating and improving body awareness.
After a SUP yoga session, you normally feel more connected and more secure on the board.
Here are five basic poses we always include in the first SUP yoga session:
Cat-cow / Marjaryasana – Bitilasana
Downward facing dog/ Adho Mukha Svanasana
Cobra / Bhujangasana
Butterfly / Baddha Konasana
Corpse pose/ Savasana
